The most common request I hear from a growing business that feels stretched is some version of “we need to hire.” The team is flat out, things are slipping, and the obvious answer is more hands. Sometimes that is right. Far more often, in my experience, the business does not have a headcount problem; it has a process problem, and hiring into a broken process does not fix the overload; it adds cost. The difference between a business that is genuinely at capacity and one that is busy but not productive is the difference between needing more people and needing better operational efficiency, and getting that diagnosis wrong is one of the most expensive habits in a growing business.
