Business Planning and Strategy Resources
Business planning and strategy is the discipline of translating commercial ambition into a structured, evidence-based plan—one that clearly tells you where you are going, why you will get there, and what the journey will cost. Done well, it is the foundation on which every other business decision rests. Done poorly, it is the most expensive mistake an entrepreneur can make.
At SGI Consultants, we have supported over 2,000 UK businesses with business planning and strategy -- from first-time founders writing their initial plan to establishing SMEs restructuring for growth. Our consultants have facilitated the securing of more than £250M in funding, with a 90% success rate across all plan types. That track record gives us a perspective most business planning resources cannot offer: we know, from direct experience across hundreds of funding applications, what works and what does not.
A well-constructed business plan is not primarily a document—it is a thinking process. The discipline of writing a proper plan forces you to confront the questions most founders prefer to defer: whether the market is genuinely large enough, whether the unit economics produce a viable business, and whether the competitive positioning is defensible against realistic challengers. Every framework in this hub -- from SWOT analysis to financial forecasting to pitch deck construction -- exists to sharpen that thinking before you commit capital to it.
This hub is built for four distinct audiences.
- Founders preparing a business plan for the first time will find the complete end-to-end framework here, from defining the market opportunity through to building credible financial projections.
- Business owners who already have a plan but are not confident it will survive serious scrutiny will find our diagnostic frameworks and the analysis we have drawn from reviewing 500 client business plans invaluable.
- Entrepreneurs preparing for investor or lender conversations will find the pitch deck, executive summary, and funding-requirement guides particularly relevant.
- Established SMEs reassessing their strategic direction after a period of growth or disruption will find the strategic planning and competitive analysis tools here the most applicable to their situation.
This hub covers the complete landscape of business planning and strategy for UK entrepreneurs and SMEs: how to write a business plan that gets funded, how to conduct competitive and market analysis, which strategic frameworks are genuinely useful for small businesses, what funders actually look for in a plan, and how to build the financial projections that underpin a credible funding application.
The guides here draw on our consulting practice and our data—not generic advice recycled from textbooks.

How to Write an Executive Summary

Most investors and lenders read the executive summary and stop if it does not hold their attention. Covers what must appear in the first two pages, what to leave out, and the structural mistakes that cause good plans to be dismissed before they are properly read.
Creating Financial Projections in your Business Plan

Financial projections in a business plan require, at a minimum, a three-year profit and loss account, a cash flow forecast for at least the first 12 months on a month-by-month basis, and an opening balance sheet. Any plan seeking external funding also requires a funding requirement schedule showing how the capital will be used and when. Our guide to preparing financial projections explains the specific methodology and common errors in detail.

Business Plan Writers: Professional Business Planning Support
If you need a professionally written, investor-grade business plan rather than a template, SGI's business plan writing service is the most comprehensive in the UK. Our consultants have written plans securing funding from Barclays, HSBC, Innovate UK, British Business Bank programmes, and leading venture capital firms.
Work With an SGI Business Strategy Consultant
Most business owners approach strategy the wrong way. They start with tactics -- marketing channels, pricing decisions, product development -- before establishing the strategic foundation that should drive all of those decisions. Without a clear strategy, every tactical decision is made in a vacuum, and the results are predictably inconsistent.
SGI's business strategy consultants work differently. We begin with a structured diagnostic that maps your current position, identifies the constraints limiting your growth, and defines the strategic priorities that will deliver the greatest return on your effort and investment. Our clients do not receive generic recommendations—they receive a strategy built around the specific realities of their business, market, and ambitions.
Our free Strategic Assessment gives you 30 minutes with an experienced SGI consultant. We will review your current planning and strategy, identify the gaps limiting your progress, and provide a clear picture of where professional support would make the greatest difference. No obligation. No sales pressure. Just clear, expert guidance.
